View Full Version : Packing coffee maker for the Pop
Leslie 06-08-2008, 03:44 PM Has anyone bought there on coffee maker for the Pop Century since they dont come in the rooms? Im looking at buying a small one this week and packing it. How can I pack that with out breaking it? Will the airport see the cord and rip open our luggage to see what it is? Should I put a note on top of our clothes as to what is in there? Thanks in advance
petesimac 06-08-2008, 04:43 PM Naw, don't bother with a coffee maker; get a refillable cup at the food court and get unlimited beverages for your entire stay. When you get back to the room after a full day of fun, walk back to the food court (hence the importance of staying near the food court) and fill up your mug with coffee, coke or anything else that you might fancy. If you'd rather not pay the money for the cup, I'm sure it wouldn't be a problem bringing the coffee maker. But again, to me it seems a bit of a waste. Your call.
Leslie 06-08-2008, 05:01 PM Ok, here's my idea. We have a frig. reserved and Garden Grocer deliverying a ton of food including breakfast stuff. My thought is get up early have breakfast in room WITH coffee and head to bus and totally bypass the food court all together. Dont leave the room until we head for the bus. Husband said he will go and get coffee in the morning but I know him from the last WDW trip he wont. So im just trying to save myself time.
petesimac 06-08-2008, 08:31 PM Yeah, time is the thing, and if you're trying to maximize every last minute, it might be a good idea. But, and it's a big one, you miss out a bit on the atmosphere of the resort. Maybe it's not a big thing, but it's fun, for me, to come back "home" and still be at Disney. So have breakfast at my Disney home to start the day, and then wrapping up a fun day with a late night visit to my kitchen at "home" and seeing all the people doing the same thing. I don't know, it just makes it special. But another but, and it too is a big one, is the money you'll save by doing it your way, so you definitely know best. Money and time versus flavor. In either event, have a ton of fun! Pop is great. Stayed there last summer for 10 days/nights.

Thanks in advanceA note on your clothes won't help. I doubt they will "rip open your luggage" if they see a cord. They should be able to see the cord attached to an object that looks a lot like a coffeemaker.
If you have glass in your luggage, good luck. Place some small clothing items like clean socks inside the carafe and pad the outside well.
Personally I would go with a travel press pot like this (http://www.peets.com/shop/essentials_detail.asp?id=502&cid=3003) rather than a whole coffeemaker. You could then just buy one of those little heating elements that heats up water in the cup. Or you might consider buying this (http://www.magellans.com/store/Health___Personal_Care___Food___DrinkEP721?Args=).
KJSJpipe 06-09-2008, 05:09 AM Since you are doing a grocery delivery you could most likely order a cheap coffee pot through them and just leave it when you go home. Most grocery stores carry small appliances like that.
Leslie 06-09-2008, 12:34 PM Well, I went to Walmart and bought a small 4 cup coffee maker for $11.00 today to take with us. I know some say yes some say no but I did also buy bubble wrap for the glass and will slip it between 2 pillows Im also taking. Yes I know taking pillows?? I only can sleep with my own pillows and the thought of someone elses drool stuck in the pillow really grosses me out. The screeners at American Airlines are going to have fun with my luggage. lol
Second Star 06-10-2008, 01:57 PM Sorry I didn't see this earlier.
I'd have gone the Melitta route, and gotten an individual cup set up.

wishiwasthere 06-10-2008, 05:32 PM Just out of curiousity how are you packing all of this plus clothing with the new extra charges on bags?
Leslie 06-10-2008, 05:39 PM Well I havent figured that out yet but hubby and I both get 1 free 1st bag because we bought our tickets in February. So i have a scale at home and will divide up both luggage to weigh under the 50 pound mark. I hope. I have high hopes for this working. lol
VickiC 06-10-2008, 08:46 PM The first bag charges don't kick in until tickets purchased after June 15th.
I never have to worry about luggage charges when we travel as a family because DH is Executive Platinum on AA and he waltzes up to the elite/First Class check-in line and hands over his always over-weight bag and they smile and say "It's so nice to see you again Mr. VickiC" and send it on thru. Not at all the way I'm treated when not with him!

 Doh, I bone-headed this one. If the room does have a coffee pot, it most likely doesn't have a microwave either. The Melitta doesn't work without hot water, so unless the tap in the sink gets hot enough (doubtful), my suggestion won't work. :( Oh well, sorry 'bout that.

That's why I love traveling with my lovely wife Jennifer, who works for AAA as a travel agent. We check in at hotels and they are (almost) always extra glad to see us.
littlej 06-16-2008, 08:55 AM I take this on business trips: http://www.blackanddeckerappliances.com/product-45.html
No glass, no filter needed. You could take the mug to the park and refill with ice and water during the day. The whole thing is very lightweight.
coronado_g 06-21-2008, 07:20 PM I'm soooo glad I read this thread!! Now I won't have the unpleasant experience of finding out too late that Pop has no in-room-coffee. That's essential for me so I read all the posts very very carefully. I've decide to buy the Black and Decker appliance for my vacation.
This is why I love MousePad. It's always packed with useful infor!
eyeorelover 06-23-2008, 01:12 PM We were staying at POR so we got the coffeepot, but with groceries being delivered and wanting to eat a warm breakfast in the room before we head out to the parks, we actually brought a small microwave from home (from my husbands classroom) and plugged it in in the room. It worked great. We packed it in a rolling duffle padded with beach towels and shoes around all the sides and saw no indication that Southwest even looked into the bag at all. The inside served as a great protective spot to bring home the glasses we purchased there (wraped up in clothes with the glass tray). We flew SW so there was no bag limit for us and it worked perfectly. We'd do it again in a second - having microwaveable sausage and pancakes for the kids in the room in the mornings was a great benefit. Take your coffee pot, pad it well in your luggage and you'll be fine. Enjoy your trip!

People, people, people!!
Trying to travel with a coffee maker is ludicrous in this time of travel hassles!!!
Just stop by Wal-Mart on your way to the resort once you reach Orlando, and buy a new one. It will wind up being cheaper than all the hassles you have to deal with in trying to carry it.
stan4d_steph 06-26-2008, 06:11 AM I still advocate buying the smaller item that you can reuse. I cringe at the thought of buying something for a trip when you get there because it's easier, then just throwing it away when you're done. It just seems really wasteful to me.
eyeorelover 06-26-2008, 01:05 PM I agree with you Steph. It really was no hassle at all to pack things (as long as you have room) as it fine to fly with such items. For us, we thought about buying a cheap microwave at Walmart once we landed, but we were using Magical Express and would have spent more on taxi/car rental than on the microwave. And for those people just suggesting to get the refilleable mugs and use those, it is nice to have the first little cup in the room before you go fill those up. We had our coffee pot make a pot a day, and supplemented our "to go" cup with one trip to the food court each morning and we were set. So I say, if you have room - go for it! Eaasy to pack and it won't alarm the airline employees.
Have a great trip!

IMHO the coffee in the food courts is nasty. At least it was the last time that I was there. It was Nescafe. I need my morning cup of coffee, and I just couldn't drink that stuff. Anyone know if they have changed coffee brands, by chance? *crossing my fingers*
tdelaney_98 06-28-2008, 11:42 AM I dunno---with the weight restrictions on the flights now, I'm in the "buy it at WalMart" crowd. If you like specialty coffees, it wouldn't take too many of those to off-set the cost of the maker.
I don't drink coffee, so it's not a concern, BUT I've seriously thought about picking up a fan to use in the rooms!
scoobydooby 06-28-2008, 02:24 PM I'm coming all the way across the pond and I'll be packing a kettle - albeit a travel kettle so smaller than usual but will seem HUGE once in case. Absolute necessity as far as I'm concerned. I will also be packing tea pot and tea cup this year - have got a cup that sits on top of the pot. Also will take up nasty room as will keep in it original box to keep it safe but thought I could live without this last year and suffered badly. If you need a coffee like I need my tea, pack the coffeemaker :)
tdelaney_98 06-28-2008, 04:29 PM Hey, Scooby--this is slightly OT, but I went on vacation a few weeks ago and HAD to take my PG Tips and my Yorkshire Gold with me.
When I got home, I made iced tea out of the PGs and it worked WONDERFULLY!
Back OT, that's the one thing I miss from my morning and evening rituals--hot tea. A kettle makes a lot of sense. I want an electric one REALLY badly!
