View Full Version : Pet Peeve's at WDW-need to get off my chest
Pr1ncess365 05-29-2008, 12:47 PM Hello all,
Just got back from a 8 day stay and it was great, but there are a few things I wanted to bring up.
These were my pet peeve's at WDW.
-All the 4 theme parks we visited (MK, Epcot, AK, and HS) had the dirtiest restrooms I've ever seen at a Disney property. It was such a shock to me since Disneyland always has an attendant and you rarely see a piece of trash on any floor, let alone water on the floor with no "caution" sign. I would undesrtand if it was peak period, but it wasn't crowded at all. In my whole entire stay I never saw an attendant in the restrooms.
-The baby changing stations didn't have disposable changing pads like they do at Disneyland. I had to use several pieces of papertowels since they were so dirty.
-I really wondered how parents can allow their little girls to dress up as princesses in 95 degree weather and it being so humid. I understand that children can be persistant, but some kids looks like they were going to pass out. I felt awful for them. I can't even imagine the parents that come in July and August.
I did see an alternative that a mom did. She dressed up her two girls in the nighgown version (very flowy and thin material) and put crowns and makeup. They looked sooooo cute and I applaud the mom.
-Babies in umbrella strollers with no canopy/shade. I saw so many babies (under one) and older being pushed around in the blazing sun with no shade over them. They looked red as tomatoes. That broke my heart. We brought our big travel stroller for my 22 month old. It covered him from rain and shine. He was comfortable the whole trip and was able to take 2.5 hour naps while we toured around the parks. It might not be the most easy to handle stroller, but it's about making sure your child is comfortable.
-Last, but certainly not least. Those plastic rental strollers. I saw kids sitting in those with no towel, blanket, sheet, anything to keep their little legs from touching that hot plastic. I just wonder why parents wouldn't put something under them- I saw several kids lefting their little legs so they wouldn't get burned. Imagine how hot those get once it's been sitting there a while.
I needed to get that off my chest. I apologize in advance if I offend anyone, but I was only observing the children.
disnut8 05-30-2008, 08:42 AM Sorry you had some bad observations. If I might add a few comments.
The bathrooms get dirty mainly because the guests don't clean up after themselves. I was in one stall where the sanitary napkins bin was stuffed full of the disposal toilet seat covers. Evidently, instead of one cover coming out of the holder, about twenty of them came out together. Instead of the person putting the covers into the big trash cans out of the stall, they just jammed it into the nearest container they could find.
I've seen those little girls dressed up like princesses as well. What a lot of parents do is to indulge their girls for however long they can handle it and then change them.
I think every child is so different. You probably would have fainted if you saw our son. He did not like the shade at all. He didn't burn. So, I'm sure there were people who thought we were being unkind to him. And if he did sit in one of those plastic strollers (he wouldn't if we paid him), there is no way in the world he would have accepted a blanket.
I'm glad you had the opportunity to vent. Please remember that each child and parent situation is different.
mzloolue 05-30-2008, 09:11 AM They usually do a fairly good job on the restrooms, but yuck is yuck...
And I'm with you on the fried babies.
I don't see it as often now, but I remember noticing and being appalled by the fried babies back in 1976 on my first visit.
This was before sunscreen and before the need to keep hydrated was talked about much. I was young and not really into babies, but it was bad enough to get my attention and for me to still remember it.
My own kids didn't go until they could walk several miles without complaining.
GusMan 05-30-2008, 01:02 PM I guess the only thing I am surprised about is the condition of the bathrooms. In most cases, I have never experienced them being more than reasonably clean.
Mrs.GusMan always did GusJr's diaper changing at the baby care center, which also gave us a nice, quiet break.
Meisha B 05-31-2008, 03:57 PM I was shocked at how dirty the bathrooms were when I was there as well. I have a DD so I am always the parent that has to take her to the bathroom. They were so bad that if I had to go, I'd rather hold it. They were dirty and smelly.
We also did BBB so my daughter was dresses as a princess. This was 2 weeks ago and it was between 88-92 outside. She was fine. She wore it from almost 1 to 5 or 6. We had extra clothes if she wanted to change (I asked several times), but she liked wearing it and was not bothered by the heat. Towards the end of the day she did change shoes.
We had our own stroller and she hardly ever used it. It was hot, but not that bad.
I guess when comig to kids, take how they feel into consideration. If they want to be covered, dressed up, uncovered, etc and it doesn't bother them, that's fine.
Kids being miserable can def makes parents miserable. We did what she was able to do and for how long she was comforatable doing it.

Hmmm, Interesting. I must say that I have always been very impressed with the quality & cleanliness of the restrooms. In fact, quite often, regardless of the time of day, it looks & smells like I'm the first one in the restroom after a thorough & comprehensive cleaning.
Actually, that's one of the main differences that I always bring up about Walt Disney World vs. other theme park locations (and even malls & office buildings )--the restrooms.

I could not agree more!

We didn't go until our kids could handle the day on their own (no stollers!) and without a nap for a couple of days in a row!
It is hard to see a child or children who you think could be in distress with parents who don't seem aware of the fact...I always wonder at the little girls who are wearing sandals and flip flops with heels! Or "clickity-clack" shoes as we used to call them....they are little girls, walking around all day! Not hoochy mamas on a stage!
DoodleMushyBoo 06-13-2008, 12:11 PM Hello all,

.
I am sad to hear that, i've always been impressed with the Bathrooms at Disney (even when i worked there they were nice for the staff as well). . .and the cleanliness of them, its sad to hear you experienced otherwise.
I've never taken a child there (minus my little nephew) but i know he hated sitting in the strollers :P but its the age i think. . .
My huge pet peeve are the screaming kids who need a nap and aren't getting one . . . but again . . . every situation has a story i'm sure :)
rentayenta 06-13-2008, 12:24 PM I agree on the dirty potties. The one in Epcot in FW near the entrance was disgusting.
scoobydooby 06-13-2008, 02:50 PM Parents screaming at tired, hot children (with no sense of economy because they're little and they're just there anyway because they got taken...) that they should be grateful and stop crying because this is a trip of a life time that cost us a fortune and they should be *!*!* grateful :( Also, while I'm on a rant, parents trying to make children taller than they are (cue clicky high shoes again and tall hair...) to get them on rides. The height restriction is there for a safety reason I'm guessing?!
An aside; if any of my words get a red underline it wasn't me
HTanner 06-14-2008, 08:48 AM We took our kids when they were 1 1/2 and 3. My daughter *hated* the shade visor on her stroller - I think it made her feel claustrophobic and trapped the heat inside the stroller, even though it kept the shade off her. We have a couple pictures where she is drooping.
We would slather the kids in sunscreen every few hours and they always had a cold water bottle. We also took them to the fountains to run through - my daughter would *not* go in the fountains, but my son did.
We also got popsicles to cool down.
When we noticed her drooping, we went to the nearest store and stood in the air conditioning until she perked up. We did whatever she/he needed.
And we took lots of breaks back at the hotel and in the pool.
I was/am very sensitive to the sun, so I totally pay attention to how my kids are doing in the heat.
I second the yelling at kids in WDW. Its ugly and ruins everyone's trip. We try to remember that they don't have as much stamina as us, are not used to as much stimulus as us, and are as excited as we are, with smaller bodies to contain that excitement. :)
