View Full Version : Heads up on major traffic delays through Sacramento!
tchatters 05-18-2008, 10:50 AM Anyone coming from north of Sacramento down I-5 or 99 should plan on major traffic delays beginning May 30th through the end of July. All lanes of traffic on I-5 through downtown Sacramento will be closed at certain times for days on end. May 30th through about June 9th the northbound lanes will be completely CLOSED.
For more info- check www.fixi-5.com . I'd hate for you to get stuck for hours on the freeway! They're estimating for us that our commute time from where we live by the airport to downtown will be 14 times longer... that's about 2 hours to go 12 miles!!!
MammaSilva 05-18-2008, 12:58 PM For anyone traveling from above Sacramento I'd recommend taking the 505 that cuts off the 5 above the construction and drops onto the 80 at Vacaville, then your choice would be to go out to the 680 to the 580 and back to the 5 or take the 12 at Fairfield that drops you back onto the 5 just above Stockton. Or you can just take the coast route.

If you are going during non commute times (not between 6-9AM and 4-7PM), I would suggest taking 505 south, to 80 West into Fairfield. Then 680 South to Dublin, hook up with 580 East back to the five.
During commute times, 80 West, then back track (sorta) on 12 East. Its a actually a lovely drive through some delta area, then it hooks up with 5 south in Lodi.
FolsomFan 05-25-2008, 06:30 PM I was worried about this, but I am going to just miss it. I catch I-5 right below Sacramento.

You are my neck of the woods. Grant Line Road for you?
tchatters 05-25-2008, 08:00 PM According to google maps, either trip on 505 will add at least an extra hour to your trip. Taking 113 adds 15 minutes. I think I'd rather plan my commute to skip noncommute times through the city and stay as close to I-5 as possible. Unless you're hoping for the scenic route.
If you're south of Sacramento, you shouldn't even notice... unless you're going north of course!

I will take 50 to I-5 South (LA). From what I understand, all the construction is going north from that point.

The only issue being westbound 50 traffic might be bad...just a heads up. If you are in Folsom, I would take Sunrise to grantline, cut over on Elk Grove Blvd to I-5

We will be in that area at 9AM on Sunday ... do you think westbound 50 traffic will be bad? I hadn't thought of that.
tchatters 05-27-2008, 06:31 PM I think at that time on Sunday you should be totally fine. Maybe add 10 minutes just to be safe but I wouldn't expect it to be bad on a Sunday at all.
FolsomFan 06-08-2008, 12:35 PM I was fine going there, but not coming home. Of course, it was around 5 when we approaching the closure, so we were totally stopped.
I think it added 20 minutes to the trip.
sjcivilady 06-08-2008, 01:04 PM My cousin just drove from Stockton to Reno - she said (from NB I-5) take 50 west to SF; stay in the right hand lanes; then take 80 towards Reno. For those wanting back on I-5, you will be connecting after a few miles. She said it was a very short detour. I imagine it will be very slow though, during rush hour.

I live about 2 miles from the detour zone. If anyone needs detailed directions for their travel plans, PM me. I can give you some inside tips based on when and where you are traveling.
amarvel 06-10-2008, 01:47 PM oh wow this is not good news for us! all southbound lanes will be closed next monday when we were planning on driving thru! and with a 15 month old adding anymore time is not going to be fun. well i guess we will be looking at alternate routes!
foolishmortal 06-10-2008, 02:08 PM Just came through there yesterday from Eugene OR.going back to kerman CA.
heading north go to 50 S.F. stay WAY rt! connect to 80 to Reno then hop off at the I-5 north rt connection! drops ypu off below the Arena. When going South use same RT 80 to SF then 50 back to I-5 south!
the traffic for monday at 5:15 went straight through SAc and we never went below 60mph! The 80 was backed up when we went by and it still was not all that bad.(compared to LA).
The south bound lanes will be blocked off june 13 -23 I think that is what I remebered on the signs!
The detours for I-5 was very short and very well maked. Had no trouble at all, plus we have a AWSOME GARMAN! THAT Thing is worth EVERY penny we spent on it! took us right to the parking lot of anywhere we wanted to go! NEVER messed up!
GOOD luck everyone!
