I am curious as I know there are several Reno that hit the DLR on a regular basis. I would love to know the route you take. I know that summer and winter may alter that route, and why you go that way.

My opinion (don't live in Reno, but travel there...)

I-80 - I-5 - Disney Way!!

Hee, hee! We are from Reno, and leave in less than 24 hours, and I was just discussing this today with a Disney junkie friend. We are fans of just what Malcon10t said - I 80 to I 5 to Harbor Blvd. My friend today suggested I 80 W to 80 business in Sac, then 99 south. It hooks back up with the 5. He said it is just slightly longer, but with many more nice places to stop (it's pretty awful along the 5, I must admit!). Since, going, we are in a hurry (obviously), we're planning to stick to our regular route. But, coming home, we have some time, and may try his suggestion.

Off to sleep, so tomorrow is here! Our kids were so excited tonight! :D

JennieI'm in Modesto, and we prefer 99 ourselves. Some will go out to 5, but I prefer having more around us for stopping. But if I was coming from Sac, I would use 5, simply so I had an excuse to stop at Harris Ranch!

Used to work in Reno, and I'd agree - take I-80 to I-5, but.....

When you get to Stockton, use Highway 4 to cut over to Hwy 99. It's only about 6 miles from I-5 to Hwy 99 there, and that way you can avoid all that Sacramento downtown interchange traffic (which can get pretty heavy at times). Hwy 99 just doesn't seem to be as vast and desolate as I-5 is from Stockton to the Grapevine.

Good luck!

We have often taken 395 south to bishop CA and then the back route....cuts off about 45 mins, but not as many stops.

The drive from Stockton to the Grapevine on 5 is my favorite stretch of highway when we go to DLR! NO TRAFFIC! :D

Whatever route you take- if you're coming through Sacramento anytime between May 30th and the end of July- make sure you check www.fixi-5.com!

I-5 through Sacramento will be CLOSED several days in a row in one direction or the other, depending on which day. It's likely that the rest of the freeways will see major traffic impacts. The schedule is changing often but as of right now, I-5 Northbound lanes will be fully closed from May 30th at 8pm to 5am June 9th. Then it switches and southbound lanes will be closed.

Even though you're going southbound through town, you should estimate major delays- particularly M-F between 7am and 10 am and 3pm and 6pm.

We go through Bishop every time, because Bishop is a nice place to stop. It takes us between 8-9 hour total, but we often stop at Bishop for the night, it cuts it in half.

We took the other route once,it seemed much longer to me, and boring.

Coming from Reno this shouldn't be an issue, just cut over on Business 80 (Capital City Freeway) this will turn into 99 or else you can take the 50/80 freeway exit (West towards San Francisco)and go a couple miles to catch up to I-5 south. This connection is south of the construction so you should have no problems.

You're right about the location, however they are still estimating major delays on any freeway through town because everyone will be rerouted. For example- my son goes to school off Hwy 50. I usually take I 5 south to 50. For those days, I will be going 80 E to the Cap City, then down to 50 and over to his exit. My husband usually takes I-5 south to go downtown for work but he'll be goign the same way- on Cap City to get downtown. Us and about 20,000 other people :)

Agreed, traffic will be very bad during commute times and heavier than normal at other times. One way to avoid some of it when coming from Reno is to get off in Rocklin at Sierra College Blvd and follow this all the way to 50(it will turn into Hazel). Get on 50 going to Sacramento/San Francisco and take this to 5 south. I don't know that its faster, but you'll be able to avoid some of the worst of the traffic.

Once you come off Hazel onto 50, take Sunrise off and take it south to Grant Line Rd. Take Grant Line west out to 99.

To go to Oregon, I'd come up I-5, then take 80 W to San Francisco. Just before Davis, take the 113 to Woodland and join back up with I-5 there. It shouldn't take you too far out of the way. This is the preferred North/South truck detour however, so try to avoid commute hours.

Malcon10t has a good plan that you could also reverse from 99 but it will take you a long time to go that way all the way back to I-5 north. I think that's a better plan for people going south from 80 to I-5.

We made it from Reno to the Carousel in exactly 9 hours last night - left at 5:16 and were here by 1:16!!!! My super trooper hubby drove 6 hours straight, which sure makes the time fly!

We're getting ready to go! I did notice those I-5 signs, and will check that out for our summer trip!

Actually it may be even easier to jump on 80 west towards San Fran, like mentioned, but when it splits in West Sacramento, take the Reno split, this will connect up to I-5 again in just a few miles. It will probably take only 15-30 minutes extra.

OK, this is faster... Once you come off Hazel onto 50, take Sunrise off and take it south to Grant Line Rd. Take Grant Line west out to 99.

Good idea, we've done this route many times when visiting family in Modesto. We don't like the 99 drive, so for us when go to DL or San Diego (where my In-laws live), we cut over to 5 the first chance we get. We have the drive down to a science, with the kids (6, 8 and 10) even agreeing that one pit stop for gas, bathroom and a run through the drive through is the way to go. 99 would make the drive a little longer.

I am a big fan of 395 south but then I am starting in Lee Vining after coming down a few other highways whose #'s I don't know, from Churchill County. Pass a few cows on the way but nothing else.

We don't take the 14, we stay on 395 until we get to just north of San Bernadino and then take the 15S I believe to the 91W, then the 57 S to Harbor Blvd. I can drive it in about nine hours from my house but it takes my husband twelve. I don't do much stopping.

Last year our neighbour told my husband to give I-80 to I-5 a try. He did fine until he got north of LA and then spent endless hours in traffic. Took him about fifteen hours that way. He hated it.

I really don't pay much attention to the road signs but I know how to get there and have never been lost in S CA.

When I lived in Reno I took 80 east to 395 south to east plumb to airport parking lot. One hour later... Disneyland.

Smartypants! :p

We almost always do I-80 to I-5. We have done 395 and 99 too. I really don't care for going 395, I think 99 is better, with the small towns along the way to stop. There are some terrible areas through 5 that have almost nothing for scenery, same with 395. Hate that.

Other than flying, I wish there was a quicker route. I hate the 8-9 hour drive. I find I'm less able to tolerate it the older I get. I'm fairly cranky by the time we arrive.

It is wonderful to see so many people in my area!
Like I said we go through Bishop, but I really don't know what routes we take, because I don't pay attention to the numbers. I really like stopping in Bishop, after you pass there it seems like we get to Disneyland rather quickly, that could be because I fall asleep...oh my husband does all the driving, he gets too frightened when I do!

When I lived in Reno I took 80 east to 395 south to east plumb to airport parking lot. One hour later... Disneyland. :) This is our route too... except I'm 2.5 hrs east of Reno... so we have to get to Reno first. Sadly, our fav airline, Aloha, that went non-stop from Reno to SNA went down recently.

I suppose eventually we'll have to drive it... but the idea of S CA traffic makes dh & I both quiver.
