View Full Version : Future of ‘Star Trek: The Experience’ In Doubt
Bytebear 05-05-2008, 09:31 AM http://trekmovie.com/2008/05/02/future-of-star-trek-the-experience-in-doubt/
For those who don't know, this is an attraction (or series of attractions) at the Hilton Hotel in Las Vegas themed after Star Trek. They have a ride similar to Star Tours, but much better and more interactive, and another 4-D attraction which also has major interactive elements. The contract is ending this year, so they may get rid of it. If you have a chance to go, it is worth it if you are a Star Trek fan.
Now, I just had a great idea for replacing Honey I Shrunk the Audience, the Pizza Port and the Arcade, and possibly Star Tours. :D
Gone2Disneyland 05-05-2008, 10:02 AM I'd seen this. LOVE Star Trek. But I can't see Disney and CBS working anything out. Nice idea tho'. :)
Alex S. 05-05-2008, 10:24 AM I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did. We've been out there a few times over the years and there never seemed to be that many people about. Ate at the restaurant but the price was so high that we never actually went into the show parts.
And it seems like most people I know all say the same thing "we went to the store and had a drink at the bar but didn't go in."
Bytebear 05-05-2008, 11:01 AM it is pricy at $35 for both shows (all day pass), and then they try to pump more out of you for pictures, and a "behind the scenes" tour. But this is Las Vegas. I drop $35 into a slot machine going to the bathroom. I am there to spend a little money, and I would rather be chased by Borg or Klingons than watch cherries spin on a wheel.
Another Dimension 05-05-2008, 05:47 PM The original is a great attraction and well worth the price if you ride a few times and spend more than just a few minutes looking around instead of just zipping thru the museum.
I haven't tried Borg Encounter 4d yet.
Hopefully this summer before the Hilton pulls the plug.
The bar/restaurant is cool. Decent food, for Vegas.
The Warp Core Breach is a good drink.
The Klingon walk-around characters are a lot of fun...
The Space Quest Casino is ok, if you don't like to win...
The Space Quest restrooms are even themed, clever and a bit entertaining.
But none of the post show, pre-show, museum, bar, restaurant, Space Quest-themed casino portion or any of the giant walk-around characters even come close to how AWESOME the Klingon Encounter is.
Whether you are a Star Trek fan or not...
If you are a theme park & highly-themed attraction fan ... the attraction is REALLY a lot of fun the first time.
It's a must see at least once for every theme park fan.
Bytebear 05-05-2008, 07:40 PM The Borg Encounter does not have the initial drama as the Klingon Encounter (if you know what I mean) but it does have preshow leading to a 3D film that plays kind of like Honey I shrunk the Audience, but on a bridge type viewscreen that actually extends above your head on the ceiling. It also has more tie-ins to Voyager which is my favorite series, so thats a big bonus for me.
My partner who doesn't really care for Star Tours loved both of these shows, so don't think they are just a rip off of Star Tours or Back to the Future. They are much better. If you are in Las Vegas this year, please go, as it will be gone soon.
Oh, and if you are a Star Trek fan, the museum is amazing.
bassett1976 05-08-2008, 04:21 PM My wife and I have visited the Hilton and stayed a few times with the Star Trek package. It's a good price for the hotel/tickets and you get a meal at Quarks as well. I've enjoyed the original attraction, Klingon Encounter. We tend to skip the simulator as neither one of us do well on simulators. The last time we went I took some Dramamine and got on with another friend and still felt really bad when I got off. I enjoyed the Borg more than my wife. The Borg show is fun but can be quite scary as the Borg tend to chase you. The preshow is better than most 3D shows preshows.
Your at a base for some research and the Borg show up. The Borg tend to chase you around until you get into the shuttle.
Since we are expecting our first child we haven't been to Vegas in over a year. We are sad that the Star Trek experience may not be around when we can visit again but hopefully someone will take over the project or it may move. The harsh thing about Vegas is that everything changes. I remember when Vegas used to be for families. ;)
Bytebear 05-11-2008, 09:54 PM I know Paramount owns Star Trek, but I just realized that they also own Indiana Jones, so if they can do Indy at Disneyland, why can't they also do Star Trek? I would love to see them replace HISTA and/or Star Tours.

I believe the deal for Indiana Jones and Star Tours (Star Wars) is directly through George Lucas / Lucasfilm.
cyberwoozle 05-15-2008, 04:19 PM the beginning of the "Klingon Encounter" is possibly the coolest practical effect I've ever experienced.
I've never seen a "how it's done", but I don't care. So incredibly incredibly cool.
I try to go to this every time I'm in Vegas.

They have a behind the scenes tour that shows you how this is done. I think they even perform the effect with the lights on.

I agree. The effect is breathtaking... literally.

Me, too! It probably is something rather simple but it truly is a head-scratcher.
Also, the beginning of the other ride (Borg) gave me the willies the first time I did it. I know it's not real but geez....
I'm going to Vegas in July and will make it a point to ride both attractions one more time. And this time I'll make sure I at least sample a mini-Warp Core Breach. For some reason, I've never eaten at Quarks even though I've stayed at the Hilton several times....
bassett1976 07-18-2008, 11:17 AM I just got an email stating that Star Trek: The Experience will be closing on September 1, 2008.
cstephens 07-18-2008, 11:53 AM Here's a recent article about the closing. (http://blog.wired.com/underwire/2008/07/star-trek-exper.html)
Yeah, Wil Wheaton's covered the closure on his blog, too.
I realize it's in the hottest time of the year, but Alex and I have bought our plane tickets and we will be visiting on a weekend in August to go see this before it closes.

I loved reading about his experience on the ride. Definitely a much different experience for him than for any of us.
Our fall trip to Vegas will be after it closes, so I wish I had the opportunity to visit the promenade again one more time. At least we had a chance when we were there several months ago. We'll probably stop by the Hilton on our trip to see the state of the dismantling. The whole Star Trek area and adjacent casino were the only reasons we went to the Hilton, so I don't expect we'll be visiting the Hilton anymore.
Bytebear 07-20-2008, 06:13 PM I just got back from San Diego, and the aeronautics museum in Balboa Park is hosting the "Star Trek Exhibit" which is essentially the same exhibit they had in Long Beach (although far more condensed, and the "Circle Vision" attraction was not there, but the main sets and many of the props were from the Long Beach show. They have the original Enterprise Captain's chair used by Kirk, and have lots of photo ops. The admission also includes the rest of the museum, which is excellent, on its own.
So, if you can't get to Vegas, but are in the San Diego area, it's worth a visit. Next week is ComicCon, so I bet it will be packed next weekend.
timbabbcomedian 09-07-2008, 11:19 PM That's so cool that someone else thought this was a good fit for Disneyland!
I was very sad to see Star Trek: The Experience go...I even made a video that is similar theme to the original post: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jbOGbkHlyVw
Nice to know there are some other Star Trek fans who are also Disney fans :D
bassett1976 09-08-2008, 06:08 AM A friend of mine sent me a video on youtube of the decommissioning ceremony that they had on the last night. It was interesting to watch and I thought it was ironic that the vulcan was having the hardest time keeping her emotions in check.

*LOL* That's great!
Bytebear 09-08-2008, 09:39 AM Anyone know what they are doing with all the props?

The stuff from the movies and TV shows, they're sending back to Paramount. The stuff they made especially for the ride I heard is getting destroyed.

They should sell the things they want to destroy. The could make lots of money and make some collectors very happy.
*Wondering if the Enterprise D Model would fit into my living room???*
